King Randor...Is That Your Boy?

Seriously, put some damn pants on.

December's new Masters of the Universe Classics action figure at mattycollector.com is King Randor who looks like the bastard love child of Kurt Russell in The Thing and the Burger King mascot. With all the cool MOTU characters yet to be made, King Randor is sort of a weird choice. He never really did much in any of the cartoons apart from offering the occasional bit of sage advice or chuckle wisely. I think we may have our first real pegwarmer of the line.

My real issue with this figure is a certain lack of, I don't know...pants. He's got a lot going on up on his torso with armor and long sleeves and below the waist it's like nothing but creamy man legs as far as the eye can see.

Finally! You get to play with the hero's dad!

I would hate to be in the Eternian Royal Court and have to look up at this dude sitting on his throne flashing his junk all day long. Now, I've seen a couple of different versions of this figure and it seems that the final version may have legs painted a weird spray-tanned orange to replicate his "tights," which is not a whole lot better. I'm no fashionista but I don't think that particular shade of red goes with that particular shade of orange.

If I had it my way, your outfit wouldn't clash so badly.

King Randor will go on sale on December 15th along with the bonus figure of The Goddess. This may be the first instance of the bonus figure outselling the monthly figure. We'll see. But if you want Randor, I'm sure he'll be hanging around for a while.

And they didn't use this 2002 design, why?.

Scareglow...Is That Your Boy?

Boo!

Coming later this month to mattycollector.com is the hotly anticipated Masters of the Universe Classics figure, Scareglow. Scareglow has always been a mysterious character, due to the fact that his appearances in MOTU have been scarce. He was released at the end of the 1980's toyline and was never actually in the Filmation cartoon. He was also never included in the 2002 relaunched series. His sole appearances to date have been in a few comics.

On top of that, he was confusingly listed as The Evil Ghost of Skeletor in his vintage release. People can be forgiven for wondering if he was actually somehow Skeletor's ghost. After all, there is somewhat of a resemblance around the eyes. However, as often happens, the collective imagination of the fandom is better than the people who write the stories, and now Scareglow is listed as The Evil Ghost Serving Skeletor. So instead of being Skeletor's ghost from the future, he's just some ghost who works for Skeletor. And happens to look like him.

"Hello, my name is Scareglow. I'll be serving you tonight. Can I start you off with any drinks or appetizers?"

As with the original figure, Scareglow features a glow in the dark skeleton design painted on a black body. The effect is something like that of a large muscly man who is wearing a skintight skeleton Halloween costume. He was originally going to dress as the Joker, but that's kind of played out.

What the hell does a ghost need bones for, anyway?

Scareglow goes on sale at 12PM shart on November 15th at mattycollector.com. The He-Man figure released in January will also be reissued that day. Scareglow should be a big seller so I wouldn't wait too long to grab him. That is, unless you are too scared.

Fun fact: Back in the '80's, when he still had his Gheri curls, he was known as Soul Glo.

Talkin Toys With Jeremy Sung of Spy Monkey Creations

I recently got a chance to chat with Jeremy Sung, the President and Director of Spy Monkey Creations, a new company that creates custom action figure accessories. In recent years, it has become increasingly common for small companies to offer accessories, playsets, stickers or other enhancements that the big toy companies are unwilling or unable to do. Spy Monkey Creations currently has a set of items on sale for “Your 7 Inch Fantasy Figures,” but which are clearly inspired by Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics line.

As a child of the 1980’s, Jeremy grew up collecting what he calls the “trinity” of ‘80’s toylines: G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Masters of the Universe. He has been a lifelong collector and began customizing at a young age, creating an unmasked version of the G.I. Joe figure Jinx as his first project. Over the years, he has honed his skills, adding levels of detail and articulation that these mass-produced kid’s toys did not come with out of the box. On top of his customization hobby, he studied sculpting in college and got a better understanding of the technical aspects of three dimensional design and production.

Spy Monkey Creations began as an attempt to create a sword for the MOTUC character Zodac, who was delivered rather light on accessories with only a pistol. Sung thought this Cosmic Enforcer would need a bit more weaponry so he created the Master Blade of Empyrean, a hefty sword inspired by Zodac’s color and deco. Fan reaction on the internet was incredibly positive, so Jeremy began selling these swords online at www.spymonkeycreations.com.


There are three versions of the sword available, each are nice and big and blend in well with the other figures and accessories in the MOTUC line. The black-painted version is meant to be used with the upcoming Wun-Dar figure (and presumably can be used to cut miniature loaves of bread). The resin in which the swords are cast is translucent and flecked with glitter to give a starry, cosmic character to the blades. The "W" symbol on each sword has been left unpainted and creates a nice window effect on the hilts. Unlike some of the recent "gummy" accessories from Mattel the swords all are sturdy and of high quality. Each batch of hand-painted swords takes about a day or so to complete in the Spy Monkey Creations workshop.




The newest piece from Spy Monkey Creations is the just-released Witching Axe of Ruination, which comes in purple and orange colors to compliment your most evil characters (and their robotic servants). These axes are wicked-looking counterparts to the famous He-Man axe, although they are a good bit larger. Their relative weight might overwhelm the loose joints that plagued some of the older figures. The axes are painted to match the two-toned power swords of Skeletor and Faker, with similar metallic purple and orange highlights.

Part of the mission of Spy Monkey Creations is to produce accessories that are of original designs, loosely inspired by various toy lines. As for the future, Jeremy is also thinking about something bat-themed that would look good with Hordak and possibly a shield in the style of his favorite character, Tri-Klops. Since I had the opportunity, I had to make a case for the one Masters of the Universe Classics character who is the most accessory-challenged.

“I know that you have solicited input from the fandom,” I started, “and it seems to me that there is one MOTUC character who is really really hurting for some kind of weapon or something...Do you know where I’m going with this?”

“I've gotten a lot of requests for The Staff of Avion,” he eventually replied, referring to the staff carried by Stratos in classic MOTU lore.

This was originally going to be Spy Monkey Creation’s second project but the resin materials out of which he makes his accessories do not work well for staves and other long thin weapons. So unless, Jeremy gets around to creating a Mace of Avion, Stratos is going to have to make due with viciously pawing at his enemies…or stealing Tri-Klop’s sword.


Masters of the Universe has always been a very accessory-oriented line, with lots of great weapons, shields and armor. It was the rare toy series where the accessory packs were an important part of the line. Part of the fun of Masters of the Universe has always been swapping armor and weapons and kit-bashing unique versions of figures either between different Masters of the Universe characters or even other lines like Warrior Beasts, Pirates of the Galaxseas or Sectaurs other similarly scaled toys that augmented your figures with added parts and accessories. The new line is no different (or perhaps even more custom friendly due to the swappable heads). The items from Spy Monkey Creations are part of a long and rich tradition of MOTU kitbashing and they serve as original, high-quality supplements and expansions to Mattel’s new collector line.

Zodak...Is That Your Boy?

The 2002 Masters of the Universe series was pretty damn cool, often much darker and more character-driven than its 1980's predecessor. It was arguably the best-realized iteration of the MOTU brand and one of the outstanding characters was the reimagined Zodak, who we will be getting this month as a bonus figure in the Masters of the Universe Classics line.

But wait, you ask. Didn't we already get Zodac? Yes, but this is Zodak. With a "K." He is a kit-bashed figure with a new paint scheme and some different deco and is envisioned as a separate character from the previous Cosmic Enforcer. I'm hoping that they will one day come out with Zodack. Or Zodaq. Or maybe Zodax. The possbilities are limited.

"Warning: Avoid mixing Zodak with alcohol. Pregnant women should avoid Zodak. Use of Zodak may cause some side effects, such as glowing symbols on your body and a deep hatred of snake people. Ask your doctor if Zodak is right for you."

Zodak is also notable for being the first black character in the MOTUC toy line, although this would mean a little more if we could actually see his face. I mean, c'mon. The first brotha gets in the line and he got his face all covered up? Seriously, why not just put him in a birka? They could have thrown in a bonus head on this guy since he only comes with 1 accessory, his staff. But still it's good to get him. Although rumor has it that his cosmic tattoos glow in the dark.





I wonder if there are therapists on Eternia? If they have any they are probably evil, Psychor: Evil Psychoanalyst of Skeletor.


Zodak goes on sale on October 15th at 12PM EST at mattycollector.com, the same day as Teela, which is ironic as I don't remember those two really getting along on the show. If you order them together, don't be surprised if they don't both make it in one piece.

Teela...Is That Your Girl?

Hello...What have we here?

Now, I like a good sausage fest as much as anyone but let's face it, the Masters of the Universe Classics line has pretty much exclusively featured hot man-on-man action up until this point. With the possible exception of He-Ro, my MOTUC figures have been desperately seeking female companionship so I am happy to announce the arrival of Teela, the "Warrior Goddess," adopted daughter to Man-At-Arms and Captain of the Royal Guard. And winner of the "Best Gams on Eternia" contest three years in a row.

In addition to her very fetching sculpt, Teela comes complete with her cobra armor, her falcon/mom, a 200x inspired sword, a shield, a cool cobra staff and an alternate head. Apparently, having lots of accessories runs in the family.

Freaky-deakies need love too.

You'll be able to get your sweaty nerd hands on her starting October 15th at mattycollector.com. Being that she's the very first female character and due to her having been the object of much pre-pubescent boy lust, Teela is very likely to sell out quickly so be ready at 12PM Eastern Time.

Now, I know you are all anxious to take Teela home. But I should warn you, like many hot girls, she has issues. First, rumor has it that she has problems turning her waist, which will limit some of the disgusting poses you will no doubt try to put her in. Second, she's got some serious emotional baggage. Webstor...Is That Your Boy?

You all remember this dude from Masters of the Universe? Webstor, The Evil Master of Escape? Master of Escape? Really? This is the play scenario that you are trying to sell to kids? Was there also an Evil Master of Hiding? Telling on People?

Anyhoo, his name is Webstor, cause he's like a man-spider and stuff.

Well, what did you want them to call him? Spydor? Black Widow? Get real. That would be totally stupid.
Webstor is September's Masters of the Universe Classics figure and he looks to be sporting a sick paint job. I'm liking the blue skin and the magenta eyes. Webstor also comes complete with a grappling hook and pistol based on his old accessories from the '80's as well as some cool spider legs built into his armor as a nod to his appearance from the awesome 2002 Masters of the Universe series. Plus, he is provocatively posed in his package sans armor and, apparently, ready to dance for your dollar bills. $20 of them to be exact.

Catch him for sale on September 15th at www.mattycollector.com starting at 12PM EST. These guys sometimes sell out within an hour or two so if you want him, be ready to go at 12.

Faker...Is That Your Boy?

Do you remember Faker from Masters of the Universe? The Evil Robot of Skeletor? No? You probably know him better as The Weird-Ass Blue He-Man. Supposedly Faker was a robot employed by Skeletor to impersonate He-Man. Faker was a perfect replica for He-Man in every way. Except for the fact that he was blue. And that he had red hair. And different armor. And a bright orange sword.

Other than those few sticking points Faker could apparently pass for He-Man. Keep in mind, the Eternians never seemed to notice the fact that Prince Adam and He-Man are the same person so, while they may have been The Masters of the Universe, they were not the smartest people in the universe. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they were tired from working out all the time (seriously does anyone on the planet not have a six-pack?) and maybe having town hall debates about health care or whatever it is that they do when they are not keeping Skeletor out of Castle Grayskull.

Faker was recently released as a premium action figure on mattycollector.com as part of the Masters of the Universe Classics series. The Evil Robot of Skeletor has an awesome funky paint job and removable armor to reveal...a pair of old-school magnetic tape rolls! How wacky is that? Apparently he was like an evil Omnibot 2000.

Faker looks appropriately pissed off but wouldn't you be if you were him? It can't be easy being the the most inept attempt at an evil twin in the history of pop culture, literally the red headed stepchild of Masters of the Universe, but damn it if he is not a cool action figure.

He-Ro.....Is That Your Boy?

Mattel has a new collector line, Masters of the Universe Classics sold exclusively on MattyCollector, featuring all your favorite MOTU characters such as He-Man, Skeletor, Trap Jaw and...He-Ro. Who the hell is He-Ro, you ask? He-Ro was an ultra rare prototype from an unproduced prequel line to Masters of the Universe that was to be set in ancient Eternia. This month he was made available to own for the first time.

I'm a big fan of this action figure line but, is it just me, or does He-Ro look like he just roller-skated out of a production of Xanadu? And did everyone in ancient Eternia have '80's hair?
